Slavery-Not my fault
One of the college courses I am taking is Ethnics and Diversity and we have been discussing slavery. I cannot understand for the life of me why some people still think that we should feel guilty that slavery ever existed. Some believe that blacks today should receive some kind of restitution because their ancestors may have been slaves. Ever since the term African Americans have become the "proper" name for blacks, some really have taken it to mean they are actually from Africa and therefore they must have ancestors who were slaves. Maybe, maybe not.
It has been over 100 years ago and we just can't stop referring to it. I realize it is part of history, like many other things, but for people to still find it necessary to use it for an excuse for all the misfortunes that have happened in their lives is ridiculous.
We have come so far and although there are always going to be a few ignorant individuals who hate people because of the color of their skin, most Americans today all have the same opportunites in life. Education, politics, religion, employment are there for anyone and everyone. If you are willing to work hard for what you want in life, there is no limit to the possibilities.
This is such a entitlement society. There are so many people out there who still like to play the system. Women still having babies while already on welfare and they cannot take care of the ones they have. People riding out the unemployment insurance as far as they possibly can before being forced to get out there and look for a job.
Look, you can blame slavery or just about anything or anyone else for your situation, or you can get up off your behind and take charge of your life. There is nothing wrong with asking for a hand, but don't just sit around waiting for the next handout.

I will always think of slavery, and any other kind of prejudices, such as those against the jewish people, the Christians, the obese, the nerds, people with deformities, to be wrong and unexecuseable. I have always said that if I had lived in the days of slavery, I would have been one to stand up against it, and possibly gave my life for it, as I would for being a Christian.
Though we should acknowledge that slavery existed, and was wrong, I agree that we should move on with our lives, learn from others mistakes, and be thankful that today our country is one of freedom.
Although I am not of the African/American color, I am sure that I also had ancestors who were possibly killed for any number of persecutions. I am sympathetic for anyone who must endure the ignorant wrongful treatment for whatever reason.
I must agree with you AN. We need to move forward from the past, and treat all humanity with dignity, respect, and compassion.
We would all be much happier if we would live life this way.
I know this is off topic, but there are times such as these, that I wish All Counties Chatter still existed. I respect your decision.
Amy, I have a great idea. Why don't you start a forum. You could call it, "All Counties Chatter II". I'll join in!!! :)
Thank you for understanding Amy. I just have so much in my life to be thankful for that all that garbage from some of the nasty posters just became a waste of my time and energy. I don't even bother reading any of their blogs any longer and would very much appreciate it if everyone would just leave me out of all that immature drama. I will continue with my blog when I can find the time. Thanks for the support though. :)

I don't believe in the restitution for slaves that have no direct lineage to their families. I do however don't think you really have the right to comment on what people should do or feel about slavery when you never experienced. My grandmother was not a slave but a sharecropper from Little Rock and it was still going on in the 50s. Slavery is still happening in this world just in different forms. It is apart of history and needs to be told whether you like it or not. If not don't like it dont take a history class. I am glad that you are comfortable enough to express your thoughts and opinions.
Here is something you said: This is such a entitlement society. There are so many people out there who still like to play the system. Women still having babies while already on welfare and they cannot take care of the ones they have. People riding out the unemployment insurance as far as they possibly can before being forced to get out there and look for a job.
What does this have to do with your original feed. You have married couples that continue to have kids because they can't use BC or for religious reasons who use welfare, you have woman who want to be able to have abortions have a viable option (i dont agree with it being used as a form of BD but it is not my place to tell anyone what they can or cant do) yet we have people trying to take that away. Are you saying that these woman are blk? Are you saying that there are more blks using unemployment insurance. Remember there are no jobs. I have about 5 US Army Vets who can't get a job and 4 of them are amputees.
You started your blog on a good point that slavery restitution needs to stop at some point. But your previous comments are racially targeted. Just sharing my opinion that is all, no disrespect intended.
